Alexander Henry

Alexander Henry, 78, of Cambridge, died Friday (April 25, 2008) at his residence. He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Byesville, son of the late Michael Henry Sr. and Mary (Wasenko) Henry. Mr. Henry was a retired disabled veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge 448, DAV Chapter 28, VFW Post 2901, and Cambridge Country Club, where he started caddying at the age of 10. He retired from the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services after 32 years of service. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and a 20-year coach and umpire for the Cambridge Little League. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Nancy Volgstadt Henry. He leaves his wife, Naomi Jean Gaskill Henry of Cambridge, whom he married Nov. 9, 1957; a son, David M. Henry of Westland, Mich.; a daughter, Anna Henry of Grove City; a grandson, Cpl. Austin C. Henry, who is serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan; a granddaughter, Emily L. Henry of Westland, Mich.; a brother, Michael J. (Vi) Henry Jr. of Houston, Texas; and a sister, Catherine (Francis) Gombeda of Buckeyeville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where a wake service will be at 8:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday (April 29, 2008) at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge, with the Rev. Fr. Robert Borer officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cambridge, with military rites. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Benedict Development Fund, 701 Gomber Ave., Cambridge, OH 43725.
