Alva Eugene "Jeep" Bates, 82, of Quaker City, died Sunday (July 26, 2015) at Genesis Hospital, Zanesville, with his loving wife and family by his side throughout his sickness. He was born July 27, 1932 in Noble County, son of the late Roy Bates and Ethel (Clark) Bates. Mr. Bates had worked for Joe Skinner and retired from Quinn Coal, where he had been a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Fred, Earl, Jack, Joseph, and Sylvester "Bert" Bates; two sons-in-law; two brothers-in-law, Dallas "Jinx" Allbritian and Jimmie Carpenter; and a great-great-grandson. He is survived by his wife, Roberta (Carpenter) Bates, whom he married October 6, 1951; four sons, Doug (& Susan) Bates of Old Washington, Greg (& Toni) Bates of Quaker City, Ronnie (& Kim) Bates of Quaker City, and Scott (& Julie) Bates of Quaker City; three daughters, Rhonda Watson (& Vinnie Arick) of Quaker City, Sheila (& Keith) Carpenter of Barnesville, and Patty Williams of Quaker City; a sister, Pearl Allbritian of Summerfield; a sister-in-law, Sue Carpenter of Barnesville; seventeen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Private funeral services were held for the family on Tuesday (July 28, 2015) with burial at Guernsey Memory Gardens, Cambridge. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Quaker City Emergency Squad, c/o PO Box 326, Quaker City OH 43773.
