Betty Aline Bates, 91, of Cambridge, died Sunday (September 28, 2014) at the Beckett House at New Concord. She was born October 26, 1922 in Coshocton, daughter of the late Arthur Ferber and Edith (Jones) Ferber. She married Donald Bates in Brownwood TX on September 17, 1942. Mrs. Bates was an LPN at Swan Hospital and with the medical office of Dr. Thomas Swan for over forty years. She was a 1940 graduate of Brown High School and a graduate of the Springfield City Hospital School of Nursing. She enjoyed yardwork, cooking, and playing cards. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church of Pleasant City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in 2000; a son-in-law, George Hawthorne; two sisters, Florence and Margaret; and two brothers, Arthur and James. She is survived by two sons, John (& Barbara) Bates of Cambridge and Tom (& Linda) Bates of Freeport; a daughter, Connie Hawthorne of Cambridge; seven grandchildren, Danielle, Thomas, Tacy, Troy, Stephanie, Christine, and Dianna; twelve great-grandchildren, Justin, Jerod, Matt, Ashley, Allison, Shelly, Tarrah, Wyatt, Jase, Ben, Zac, and Haley; a great-great-grandson, Aaron; and her pet cat, Smokey. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will be held Wednesday (October 1, 2014) at 11 a.m. with Pastor Michael Poole officiating. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to one of the following organizations: 1) Hospice of Guernsey Inc., PO Box 1165, Cambridge OH 43725; or 2) Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 317, Pleasant City OH 43772.
