Billy S. Cater, 89, of Cambridge passed away Monday (April 6, 2009) at his home. He was born May 30, 1919, on Memorial Day, in Cambridge, son of the late William F. and Susanna (Scott) Cater. Mr. Cater retired from Columbus Equipment. He later sold bituminous products for Koppers Inc. Billy was a decorated WWII and Korean War veteran. He was part of the Normandy Invasion with the 4th Infantry Division and served in the Ardennes, Western Germany, Northern France and the Rhineland, he was awarded an ETO Unit Citation, 5 Silver Stars and an arrowhead. He later served in combat in the Korean War. He received Presidential citations for both WWII and the Korean War. Billy loved construction and building things. His other loves were woodworking, fishing, turtle hunting, all types of mechanics, and gardening and raising his own home grown goodies. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Max Cater; one sister, Elma Nicholson. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Saltsgaver) Cater whom he married June 1, 1946; one son, Cliff Scott Cater of Cambridge; one daughter, Sudene (Randy) Palmer of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Tiffany and Jessica Palmer. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge where services will be on Friday 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jim Spain officiating. Burial will be in Senecaville Cemetery. The family requests that memorial donation be made to Hospice of Guernsey, P.O. Box 1165, Cambridge, Ohio 43725 or the Guernsey County Veterans Council, c/o Veterans Services, 627 Wheeling Ave., Cambridge, Ohio 43725.
