Billy James Payton, 82, of Cambridge, passed away on November 2, 2016 at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born January 5, 1934 in Guernsey County to parents Theodore Payton and Lottie (Rogers) Payton. Billy was retired from EG Smith after twenty years, also employed at Berwick Hotel as a chef along with numerous other jobs including serving as a chaplain at EG Smith. He was affiliated with Faith Community Free Methodist Church in Cambridge, Ohio. He was an active member of St. Paul CME, Shaffer Chapel AME, St. Paul Smithfield, and Bethel AME. He was also an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Helen and Betty Mallory; and brothers, Theodore Payton, George Payton, Gerald Payton, Harold Payton, Charles Payton, Robert Payton, and Thomas Payton. He is survived and loved by wife, Reverend Diana Payton; daughter, Shirley Betts; five stepchildren; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth Payton (whom he affectionately called "Mother"); a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends who loved him dearly. Visitation will be held Saturday (November 5, 2016) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Repast will be held at Faith Community Free Methodist Church, 721 Madison Avenue, Cambridge OH 43725.
