Carl L. Anker

Carl L. Anker, 88, of Cambridge, died Saturday (November 10, 2007) at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. He was born on December 4, 1918 in Cambridge, son of the late Lloyd Anker and Olive E. (Yaw) Anker. Mr. Anker was a lifetime resident of Cambridge and was co-owner of Ankers Appliance before his retirement. He was a 1941 graduate of Muskingum College and a member of the Alban Club. He also completed additional coursework at The Ohio State University. Mr. Anker was associated with the Guernsey County Children Services since its inception, and currently served as its president since 2000. Other activities included a Cambridge City Council member, member of the Cambridge Savings & Loan Board of Directors, and current president of the Guernsey County Cancer Society. He was a fifty-year member of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, where he was also a former trustee of the church. He was an avid golfer and a steadfast Buckeye fan. Mr. Anker was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, earning the rank of Captain and serving his country with honor. He served in General Patton's army in Europe and also in the Battle of Bulge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Molly F. (O'Quinn) Anker, who died on December 23, 1979; and two brothers, an infant brother Harold Anker and Stanton L. Anker, his former business partner. He leaves a son, Stephen C. Anker of Henderson NV; a very close friend and companion, Belva K. Edwards of Cambridge; a sister-in-law, Martha A. (Wagner) Anker of Cambridge; two nephews, Mark W. (& Ruth) Anker of Cambridge and David L. (& Debra) Anker of Cambridge; and two great-nephews, Matthew and Thomas Anker, both of Cambridge. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge. Funeral services will be held on Friday (November 16, 2007) at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, with Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Guernsey County Cancer Society or to any charity of one's choice.
