Charles Ross Hanes Jr., a cherished member of the Kimbolton community, passed away on November 12, 2025, at the Ohio Health Southeastern Medical Center. Born on January 6, 1936, in Cambridge, he lived a life rich in community service, family devotion, and personal interests that brought joy and spirit to those around him.
A dedicated professional, Charles committed himself to various roles throughout his career, notably working for A&P for 25 years, Riesbeck's for 16 years, and having stints at More-For-Less, IGA, and Pattersons Meat Market. He also shared his leadership skills as the Tour Manager for Buckeye Tours and proudly owned and operated Hanes Meat Processing. His work ethic and commitment to his trades reflective of the strong values he instilled in his family.
Charles served with pride in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His military service included time in Okinawa, Japan, and Camp Lejeune, NC. In 2019, he participated in an Honor Flight, an experience that marked a highlight of his service.
A loving husband, he is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Shirley (Durben) Hanes, who stood by his side as the love of his life. Charles was a proud father to Tamara Galloway and Charles "Rusty" (Rebecca) Hanes. He also leaves behind his cherished siblings, Trent Hanes, Carol Mohler, and Bobbie Harding, alongside a host of beloved grandchildren including Nicole (Shultz Shuman) Galloway, Jason (Britani) Galloway, Justin Galloway, Joe (Whitney) Galloway, Dalton Hanes, Katherine Cheyenne (Tyler Winkleman) Hanes, and Cody Paver. He was a doting great-grandfather to Lyla Galloway, Bryson Galloway, and Elliott Daniels, and is remembered by several nieces and nephews.
Charles' passions extended beyond his career and family. He was an avid sports fan, passionately supporting the Ohio State Buckeyes Football, Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Indians. His hobbies included camping, traveling with Buckeye Tours, visiting all 49 states, hunting, fishing, playing cards, dancing, and indulging in snacks, especially cookies and candy. His spirit of adventure and zest for life resonated with all who knew him.
Charles was deeply involved in his community, serving as a Liberty Township Trustee for an impressive 28 years. He was a loyal member of the North Salem Presbyterian Church since 1961, where he served as a trustee and elder of the board of session. His commitment to his community extended to his memberships in the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge, further demonstrating his dedication to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith (Gibson) Hanes Archer and Charles Ross (Josephine) Hanes, as well as his siblings Barbara Lauer, Robert Hanes, Jerry Hanes, and Lanta Archer.
Friends and family will honor Charles during visitation on November 16, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and November 17, 2025, 11:00AM-12:00PM, followed by a funeral service on November 17, 2025, at 12:00 PM. Both services will be conducted at Thorn-Black Funeral Homes, Inc., located at 139 S 9th St, Cambridge, OH 43725. Burial will be held at North Salem Community Cemetery with military honors by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
