Donald "Don" L. Coss

Donald "Don" L. Coss, 90, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (January 22, 2013) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. He was born December 25, 1922 in Cambridge, son of the late Melvin Coss and Bertha Mae (Linn) Coss. Mr. Coss worked for Prudential Insurance from 1952 to 1983. He held various Cambridge city offices, including councilman and treasurer. He was also a member of the Cambridge Park Board at one time. He was a US Army veteran, having served during WWII in the China-Burma-India Theater. He was a highly decorated veteran, earning many awards for his military service, including the Bronze Star and the Soldier's Medal. Mr. Coss had a love for the game of baseball. He served as a baseball scout for the Cincinnati Reds from 1963 to 1968. Then he chose to continue to coach his American Legion baseball team. He started in youth baseball in May of 1952 and continued to be involved in the program for the rest of his lifetime. He became a charter member of the Guernsey Valley Baseball Association Inc. in 1962 and served as the first president from 1962 to 1973. He also served as the treasurer of the organization. He was a life member of American Legion Post 84, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2901, and the Disabled American Veterans Guernsey Post 28. He also served on the YMCA Board of Directors for six years. Mr. Coss was a life member of the First Baptist Church. He was a very active member of the church, and was a Trustee Emeritus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Polly Anne (Hackney) Coss; his second wife, Lona Geraldine Archer (Radcliff) Coss; two brothers, Forest Ray Coss and Paul Melvin Coss; a sister, Mabel Virginia (Coss) Hartman; and a son, Mark Coss. He is survived by his children, Danny Lee (& Mary Jane) Coss, Pamela Sue (& Dave) Cesner, and Tommy Clark (& Roberta) Coss; thirteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Family and friends may call on Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge. Funeral services will be held Saturday (January 26, 2013) at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Cambridge, with Pastor Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with military graveside services conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
