Effie Gladys Johnson

February 2, 1929 — July 3, 2023

"Absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." II Cor. 5:8

Effie "Gladys" Johnson, 94, went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on July 3, 2023, after a brief illness. She was born February 2, 1929, to the late Hugh P. and Frances (Gregg) Moore, near Flushing, Ohio.

One of eight, raised during the great depression, Gladys learned to be appreciative of each and every blessing God provided. She graduated from Flushing High School and worked at the Gas Office and Shirt Factory in Barnesville.

On January 26, 1955, Gladys married John D. Johnson. She always put her husband and family first and filled their home with love. Together they raised four children, Faith (Jim) Dodd of Myrtle Beach, SC; John K. Johnson (George Cook) of Newark, Ohio, Pamela (Ken) Nayman, (deceased); and Dale Johnson (John Camacho) of Phelan, California. They were also blessed with six grandchildren, Rachel Wehr-Hill (Fiancé Ben Westfall) of Byesville; Adam (Julie) Chrisman of Byesville; James (Tammy) Dodd of Caldwell, Jeremiah (Stacey) Dodd of New Concord; Rebekah (Jimmy) Keyser of Alliance; and eleven great-grandchildren, along with extended family and many dear friends.

In his "second" career, John was appointed a Minister. Gladys filled the role of the "Pastor's Wife" with humbleness, love, kindness, and support. She faithfully went with him on home visits and was always there for every sermon he preached. Alongside her husband's bicycle shop in Bowerston, she ran a secondhand store. "Gladys' Once Upon A Time Shop." Most often she gave away much more than she sold. She was a member of Mt. Bethel Chapel in Bowerston and attended Christ UMC in Cambridge.

Greeting her in heaven along with her parents, husband John D., and daughter Pam, were a grandson, Timothy Wehr, sisters, Mary, Jennie, Clara, Cora Mae and Freda, brothers, Harold and Glen, along with countless other dear relatives and friends.

Friends may call at the Thorn Black Funeral Home in Cambridge on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 10AM-11AM, where a funeral service will be held at 11AM with Pastor Jeff Eschabugh officiating. Burial will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery in Flushing.

During this time of sorrow, Gladys' family would like to give thanks to their extended family, church family and friends, who have undergirded Mom and each of them with prayer. "Those we love are with the Lord, and the Lord has promised to be with us. If they are with Him and He is with us, they can't be far away."- Peter Marshall
