Elizabeth Kertel of Cambridge died Saturday (March 31, 2018) at Cambridge Care and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her family. She was born August 22, 1924, in Lisbon, Ohio, daughter of Jacob and Frances (Oman) Bergant. Under the musical direction and tutelage of her father, she and her four sisters formed a band called The Bergant Sisters playing Slovenian style polka music as well as classical and popular styles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Kertel, Sr., her four sisters, Frances Hoffman; Mary Mellon; Josephine Pukalski; and Virginia Eberly. She is survived by her son, John Alan (Dorothy) Kertel of Cambridge; two daughters, Virginia J. Kertel of Roseland, Virginia, and Mary T. Kertel of Cambridge; two granddaughters, Marcia R. Kertel of Las Vegas, and Raquel (Michael) Harker of Lovingston, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Harker, Jasper Harker, and James Harker; and a foster great-granddaughter, Shelby Dixon. She leaves a sister-in-law, Josephine M. Kertel Taylor of Dothan, Alabama; several nieces and nephews, and all her special friends and second family from Cambridge Care and Rehabilitation Center. There will be no calling hours or services. As an expression of sympathy the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Guernsey, Inc., P.O. Box 1165, Cambridge, OH 43725.
