George B. Hawthorne

George B. Hawthorne Jr., 65, of Cambridge passed away Sunday (June 13, 2010) at OSU Ross Heart Center surrounded by his family following a 3 ½ year battle with lung cancer. He was born April 1, 1945 in Elyria and was the son of the late George B. and Helen M. (House) Hawthorne Sr. George previously worked at John Deere as a mechanic, and Orme Hardware. He later owned and operated a small engine repair shop before retiring in 2007. He was a 1963 graduate of John Glenn High School and a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Pleasant City. He enjoyed traveling with his family, yard work and spending time with his grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Connie (Bates) Hawthorne whom he married August 20, 1966; one son, Troy (Katy) Hawthorne of Cambridge; two grandsons, Justin and Jerod; a step-sister, Patricia (Arthur) Bay of St. Louis; mother-in-law, Betty Bates of Cambridge; two brother-in-laws, John (Barbara) Bates of Cambridge and Tom (Linda) Bates of Freeport; and his dog, Tahoe. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge where services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery. Memorial donation may be made to James Cancer Center.
