Helen Mae Bates, 100, of Salesville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (April 12, 2016) at the Beckett House in New Concord. She was born August 9, 1915 in Richland Twp. and was the daughter of the late Owen Kelly and Oma Catherine (Roe) Hull. Mrs. Bates retired from the former Guernsey Memorial Hospital where she worked in Central Supply. She was the oldest and longest standing member of Salesville Church of Faith and the Esther Circle. She was also a member of Leatherwood Seniors, and was a graduate of Quaker City High School where she was one of the first members of the women's basketball team. She was an avid gardener and was well known for her beautiful flowering porch boxes. In addition to her parents Helen was preceded in death by her husband and sweetheart, Paul Richard Bates whom she married July 15, 1953 and passed away July 4, 1965; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Brown; two brothers, Owen Jr. and Bill Hull; and one sister Lillian Millhon. She is survived by one daughter, Naomi Kay Ferguson of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Melissa Slone, Melanie Baldwin, Chris and Paul Brown; eight great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be sent to Salesville Church of Faith, or Hospice of Guernsey. Calling hours will be Saturday (April 16th) from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Salesville Church of Faith where services will be at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Perry Baranich and Jeff Eschbaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Friends Cemetery.
