James Arthur Vorhies, 90, of Cambridge, died Sunday (July 31, 2016) at Cambridge Health & Rehab Center. He was born October 6, 1925, son of Samuel L. and Emma (Grimes), and helped raised by his stepmother, Mary. Upon completion of high school, he entered the US Navy and served during World War II. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing occasionally. He also enjoyed reading, poetry, and Civil War history. Mr. Vorhies retired from Goodyear in Akron. He was a member of the Stop Nine Church of Christ. In addition to his parents and stepmother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Webb) Vorhies, who died April 28, 2015; three brothers, Argyl, Rolland, and William; and four sisters, Mary, Martha, Dorothy, and Lois. He is survived by two sons, Samuel (& Carol) Vorhies of Akron and James (& Lori) Vorhies Jr. of Pleasant City; a daughter, Anita (& Bryon) Dickinson of Cambridge; nine grandchildren, Samuel Jr., Stephanie, Brian, Melanie, Justin, Andrew, Eric, Susan, and Cory; and eleven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday (August 4, 2016) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with military honors conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
