John S. Abbott

John S. Abbott, 94, of Cambridge, died Monday (June 11, 2018) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born December 10, 1923 in Otsego, son of the late Lyle R. Abbott and Lillian A. (Castor) Abbott. Mr. Abbott was the owner and operator of the Otsego General Store and the Adamsville General Store. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Muskingum University. He was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church. Mr. Abbott was a US Army veteran, having served during WWII in both the European and North African campaigns as a Staff Sergeant. He was a life member of the Cambridge Elks Lodge 448, a member of the Guernsey Bank Board of Directors, a member of the Pritchard-Laughlin Committee, and a former president of Cambridge Country Club. He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (White) Abbott, whom he married November 3, 1951; a daughter, Charlotte (& Tom) McCartney of Cambridge; three grandchildren, Dirk Martin II (& Denise Davis), Cassie (& Todd) Dever, and Evan (& Lane) McCartney; five great-grandchildren, Kerstyn, Noah, Cora, Finley, and Lincoln; and three cousins, Don Abbott, Harold Castor, and Ruth Rainforth. Visitation will be held Wednesday (June 13, 2018) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will be held Thursday (June 14, 2018) at 11 a.m. with Rob Lillienthal officiating. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with military graveside services conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in John's name to any charity of the donor's choice.
