John E. Phipps Jr., 90, formerly of Cambridge, died Friday (May 6, 2016) at the Adams Lane Care Center of Zanesville. He was born in Nov. 26, 1925, in Hebron, son of the late John Edward Phipps Sr. and Martha Ann (Miller) Phipps. He was a Protestant by faith. He enjoyed reading the Bible, traveling and word search puzzles. John was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. He also received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal for his service to his country. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Faye (Johnson) Phipps, who he married on Sept. 27, 1944; a brother, Wayne Phipps; and two sisters, Anna Dupler and Betty Labora. He is survived by a son, Terry (Pamela) Phipps of Cambridge; a daughter, Kay (Richard) Kelley of Cambridge; a brother, Clyde Phipps of Heath; five grandchildren, Richard (Tonya) Kelley Jr., Michael (Viola) Kelley, Joe (Janelle) Phipps, Douglas Brenning and Jamie Phipps-Moody; six great-grandchildren, Briana Rose Kelley, Jacob E. Kelley, Jeston Froehlich, Nathaniel Phipps, Graci Ann Kelley and Lorene Rose Kelley; and three great-great-grandchildren, Riley Sue Hardy, Brooklyn Faith Hardy and Cora Rose Froehlich. A graveside service will be on Tuesday, May 17, at 2 p.m. in Guernsey Memory Gardens. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
