Jon C. Hawthorne, 77, of Cambridge, died Friday (July 5, 2013) at Wheeling Hospital. He was born May 27, 1936 in Cambridge, son of the late Charles Hawthorne and Josephine (Neyman) Hawthorne. Mr. Hawthorne was employed with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and later retired from the Belmont County Sheriff's Department having earned the rank of sergeant. He also had been an employee of the former Scott Funeral Home and then Thorn-Black Funeral Home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a 1954 graduate of Cambridge High School. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie 386. Mr. Hawthorne was US Army National Guard veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter. He is survived by his wife, Harriet (Bolling) Hawthorne of the home, whom he married September 4, 1985; five sons, Jon (& Lee) Hawthorne Jr. of Florida, Steve Hawthorne of Florida, Jonathan (& Natalie) Hawthorne of St. Clairsville, Todd Eckles of St. Clairsville, and Rodney Eckles of St. Clairsville; four daughters, Cathy Hawthorne of Virginia, Julianne (& Stan) Szymialis of Wheeling WV, Theresa (& Chuck) Wortman of Flushing, and Debbie (& Hugh) Roller of Cambridge; a sister, Norma Macadam of Las Vegas NV; nineteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Family and friends may call on Tuesday (July 9, 2013) from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions in Jon's name be made to one of the following organizations: 1) Guernsey County Veterans Council, PO Box 572, Cambridge OH 43725; or 2) American Lung Association, 1950 Arlingate Lane, Columbus OH 43228.
