Joseph Pellicer Shively, 88, of Cambridge, died Saturday (July 23, 2011) at the Autumn Health Care Center, Cambridge. He was born March 20, 1923 in Akron, son of the late Richard Shively and Josephine (Pellicer) Shively. Mr. Shively was a 1954 graduate of Muskingum University, where he earned a B.S. in Mathematics. He later achieved his Masters in Education at Stanford University in 1963. He taught math at the former Quaker City High School from 1954 to 1960, and eventually retired from Dana Hills High School in California. He enjoyed snow skiing and farming. Mr. Shively obtained his private pilot certification. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Muskingum University Alumni Association and Stanford University Alumni Association. He was Catholic by faith. Mr. Shively was a US Army veteran, having proudly served during WWII. He is survived by five brothers, Richard (& Maravillas) Shively Jr. of San Jose CA, Daniel (& Pamela) Shively of Quaker City, John (& Dorothy) Shively of Oakland CA, Robert William (& Joan) Shively of Gates Mills, and Dr. Frank (& Phaedra) Shively of Sante Fe NM; a sister, Josephine (& Charles) Primbs of Encinitas CA; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday (July 27, 2011) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge, with Father Robert Borer officiating. Burial will be at Friends Cemetery, Quaker City, with military graveside services conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
