Joseph Albert Stempko Joe Stempko went home to the Lord, peacefully letting go on Friday, August 8. "Uncle Joe" joins his parents, Paul and Ella Stempko, his beloved brother Paul George and sister in law Rosemary in the presence of God's family in heaven. Joe was born on April 7, 1923 in McAdoo, Pa., the first son of Paul and Ella. From his youth and throughout his adult life, Joe's good nature and easy going demeanor always won over the hearts of anyone he encountered. He worked for many years at Fedulla's Italian Restaurant in Hazleton, Pa., where he was known by customers and fellow employees for his hard work and ever present smile. Following the death of his parents in the early 70's, Joe moved to Cambridge to be with brother Paul and Rosemary. He was a 25 year resident at The Berwick downtown and was loved by all who knew him there. He worked at the old Dutch Pantry on Rt. 209 and became a well known fixture, beloved by employees and customer alike. He retired in the mid 80's in good health, ready to enjoy a good life focused on what he loved and enjoyed. Joe was a communicant at St. Benedict Church, serving as an usher and participating in church activities and various organizations. He stayed in shape by walking to mass every day from his apartment. Another great joy in his life was his friends and staff at the Guernsey County Senior Citizen's Center - his safe haven and favorite place to go following his retirement. His favorite activity was the annual fashion show and he loved to model for this event. Joe was cited on numerous occasions for his volunteer work and participation in the activities held at the Senior Center over the years. Joe also loved the many festivals held in Cambridge throughout the years, and eagerly participated in the Salt Fork Arts Festival, Hopalong Cassidy Days, The Dickens Festival, and various other events. Joe loved life, people, his Church, and the Lord. It was a rare day that Joe ever exhibited anger, despair, mistrust, or a harsh word. Everyone who came in contact with Joe came away richer for the experience. He truly had a heart of gold. Joe is survived by his nephew and Godchild Paul Thomas and wife Jessica, nephews Dave Stempko and wife Marlane, Mark Stempko and wife Kathy, John Stempko and wife Karan, nieces Julia, Kelsey and Rachel Stempko, nephews Josh Stempko and wife Tiffany, and J. Drake Wakefield. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday (August 14, 2014) at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Cambridge, with Father Paul Hrezo officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Guernsey County Senior Citizen's Center (1022 Carlisle Avenue, Cambridge OH 43725) in Joe's name.
