Kathryn Denius

September 20, 1916 — November 12, 2010

Kathryn "Kate" (Mathews) Hayes Starr Denius was called to her eternal rest at the age of 94 Friday (November 12, 2010) at Beckett House where she had been living when Alzheimer's disease and a broken hip changed her life on this earth. Martha Kathryn Mathews was born in Marion, Ohio, September 20, 1916, to Charles A. Mathews Sr. and Mary Ellen Snoots. Her mother, father and infant daughter, Margaret Kathryn Hayes, and her three husbands preceded her in death: John McCollum Hayes, Sr. whom she married June 19, 1938; Jasper Starr whom she married July 5, 1952; and Paul Denius whom she married July 27, 1985. Her children survive Kathryn: Rev. Dr. John M. Hayes, Jr. and his wife Atril of Hannibal, Missouri; Charles M. Hayes and his wife Helen of Salem, Ohio; Bernard G. Hayes of Orient, Ohio; and Josephine E. Shimek and her husband Don of North Canton, Ohio. Eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, plus four great-great-grandchildren also survive Kathryn. Kathryn graduated from Brown High School in Cambridge, Ohio, in 1934. She attended Cambridge Business College, which prepared her to work throughout her career as a bookkeeper. Kathryn was an active member of the Quaker City United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught a Sunday School class for young people. She always enjoyed singing and at one point in her life was an active member of the Cambridge Mother Singers. The family is very grateful for the comfort and support given to Kathryn and her family by the staff at Beckett House in New Concord, Ohio. No calling hours will be observed. A memorial service will be held Saturday (November 20, 2010) at 11 a.m. at the Quaker City United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of the following organizations: 1) Alzheimer's Association (Greater East Ohio Area Chapter), 1815 W Market St, Suite 301, Akron OH 44313; or 2) Quaker City United Methodist Church, PO Box 409, Quaker City OH 43773.
