Larry A. Caldwell

Larry A. Caldwell of Cambridge, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on July 27, 2026. He was born November 9, 1936, in Freeport, Ohio, a son to the late Kenneth E. Caldwell and Kathryn (Wharton) Caldwell.

Larry graduated in 1954 from Freeport High School and attended West Liberty State College. He married Carol (McCullough) in 1955 and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three children Kathy (David) Milligan, Keith (Tricia) Caldwell and David (Brenda) Caldwell. Larry joined Cambridge Savings Bank in 1958, where he devoted the next 48 years of his life. He was named Secretary-Treasurer in 1962 and became Executive Vice President, Secretary, and Managing Officer in 1968. He was named President and CEO in 1974 and served as bank president of Cambridge Savings Bank, Camco’s original flagship bank, for 27 years. He later became Camco’s President and CEO, forming the only publicly traded company headquartered in Guernsey County. Larry retired as President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Camco Financial Corporation in 2006.

On the state level, he was a member and chairman of the Ohio League of Financial Institutions board of trustees. He also served on the national league board of directors and the Cincinnati Federal Home Loan Bank board of directors. In 2005, Ohio Governor Bob Taft re-appointed Caldwell to a second three-year term on the Savings and Loan Association and Savings Bank Board. Larry was very active in community affairs. He was named The Daily Jeffersonian person of the year three times. He was also named the first Sidlo Award winner by the Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce for Leadership, Vision and Legacy. Larry was honored to be an ordained Elder of the Cambridge Presbyterian Church and served on the building committee to build their new church and was Director Emeritus of Muskingum University Board. Larry also enjoyed serving the community as president and board member of the Community Industrial Association, the Guernsey County Port Authority, Community Improvement Corporation, Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center, The Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce, the Guernsey County Foundation, Cambridge Country Club, the Jaycees and the United Way.

Larry’s personal highlights were times he spent with his family. Some of his favorites included winter ski adventures in the Rockies and summer vacations at the beach with all of his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling with Carol and spending winter months in Fort Myers, Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Kathy, precious grandson Christopher David Caldwell, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Russell Paterson, and sisters-in-law Kay Sanders and Helen Speaks. He is survived by his wife Carol (McCullough) Caldwell, whom he married on August 6, 1955; two sons Keith (Tricia) Caldwell of Cambridge and David (Brenda) Caldwell of Cambridge, son-in-law David Milligan of Cambridge, six grandchildren Ryan (Nicole) Milligan, Whitney Milligan (Jim Bretz), Lauren (Kevin) Krinsky, Kathryn Caldwell, Megan Caldwell and Caroline Caldwell, and two great granddaughters; Kennedy and Ava Krinsky, as well as brother-in-law Hank Speaks and several nieces and nephews.

Calling Hours and Services

Funeral services will be held at Thorn Black Funeral Home with visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a funeral service on Friday, July 31, 2026, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by an 11:00am service at Cambridge Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jeff Bergeson officiating. A private family graveside service will be held at Northwood Cemetery at the family’s convenience.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to Guernsey County Foundation at PO Box 5, Cambridge, Oh 43725. The family would also like to give special thanks to his caregivers, Kari, Tiffany and Lisa for all of their caring support, as well as the compassionate staff from the Hospice of Guernsey.
