Leslie H. McCollum, 86, of Cambridge, died Monday (August 17, 2009) at the Red Carpet Health Care Center, Cambridge. He was born October 7, 1922 in Cambridge, son of the late Oscar L. McCollum and Rose (Linehan) McCollum. Mr. McCollum retired from the Cambridge City School District, after twenty-six years of service. He was a WWII Marine Corps veteran, having served with the 6th Marine Division in the South Pacific and Okinawa, Japan. Mr. McCollum was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2901, a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Hearts, a life member of the DAV Chapter 28 and a life member of the Marine Corps League. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes (Kawa) McCollum, who died March 17, 2000. They were married July 10, 1948. Also deceased are three brothers, Ohlin, Oscar and Ross; and a sister, Joy Dominick. He is survived by a son, Leslie (& Leanna) McCollum of Cambridge; a daughter, Janis McCollum of Pahrump NV; a brother, Jerry (& Lillian) McCollum of Florida; a sister, Monta Rose (& Jack) Miller of Birmingham; and a granddaughter. No calling hours will be observed. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday (August 19, 2009) at 10 a.m. at Guernsey Memory Gardens, Cambridge, with Rev. John Brandenburg officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, is handling arrangements. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to: (1) St. John's Episcopal Church, 1025 Steubenville Avenue, Cambridge OH 43725; or (2) Guernsey County Humane Society, PO Box 422, Cambridge OH 43725.
