Luther "Boots" Bates, 66, of Cambridge, passed away quietly at his home on Sunday (February 22, 2009). He was born on June 8, 1942 in Cambridge, son of the late Theodore "Ted" and Orpha May (Davis) Bates. Mr. Bates was a former employee of Moldrite Plastics and was a tree trimmer for many years. He was an avid NASCAR and pro-wrestling fan. Mr. Bates was a U.S. Army veteran. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a niece, Melissa Ann Bates; a nephew, Richard Otis Bates; and a great-niece, Ashley Bates. He leaves a brother, Paul Bates Jr. of the home; three sisters, Carol Moss of Cambridge, Susan Smith of Columbus and Barbara Kunnieti of Orrville; a nephew, Paul (& Elisa) Bates of Cambridge; two nieces, Paula Johnson and Christina Ledet both of Cambridge; seven great-nieces, Staff Sergeant Danielle (Evan) Jacobus of Spokane WA, Melissa Bates, Toria Bates and Abbie Bates all of Cambridge; Rachael Ledet, Katelyn Ledet and Hannah Ledet of Houma LA; two great-nephews, Jaron Johnson and Ricky Casey both of Cambridge; and a special friend, Sandy Eltringham of Cambridge. Family and friends may call on Thursday (February 26, 2009) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will follow at 12 p.m. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Byesville.
