Mary E. Bates

Mary E. Bates, 91, of Kimbolton passed away Tuesday (March 27, 2012) at Lafayette Pointe Nursing Facility. She was born February 27, 1921 in Tuscarawas County and was the daughter of the late John and Laverna (Thomas) Norris. Mrs. Bates was a secretary for Westfield Insurance, the former Fletcher Hospital and the Veterans Administration. She attended Training School of Columbus. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cambridge where she was also a member of the Naomi Ruth Sunday School Class, Hopewell Homemakers, Birds Run Grange, Pomona Grange, where she was secretary for 32 years, State and National Grange member, and a 1938 graduate of Newcomerstown High School. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bates whom she married November 2, 1947 and an infant son John Edward. She is survived by two sons, Walter (Mary) Bates of Kimbolton and David Bates of Ashville, NC; one daughter Barbara Bates of Pickerington; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Calling hours will be Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge where services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor A.C. Dockery officiating. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery.
