Mary Edith (Oakley) Canel, 96, of Zanesville and formerly of Quaker City, died Saturday (October 5, 2013) at The Helen Purcell Home of Zanesville. She was born July 15, 1917 in Byesville, daughter of the late James Clyde Oakley and Mary "Mame" (Ramage) Oakley. Mrs. Canel had worked as a lab tech for Broughton's Dairy and later as a clerk at Rink's Department Store for thirteen years. She was a member of the Quaker City United Methodist Church and a former member of the Quaker City Rebekah Lodge. Mrs. Canel was a 1935 graduate of Byesville High School. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jules Canel, who died March 5, 2008. They were married on March 23, 1937. Also deceased are three brothers, Vernon Lester Oakley, Harry Raymond Oakley, and John Samuel Oakley. She is survived by a son, Jules Eugene (& Janice Irene) Canel of Quaker City; a daughter, Margaret (& "Bud") Long of Zanesville; four grandchildren, Brenda Kay (& Shawn) Glaub of Zanesville, Gayle Renee (& Michael) Delozier of Zanesville, Travis Jules (& Michelle) Canel of California, and Kimberly Irene (& Mark) Bell of California; ten great-grandchildren, Jules Anthony Brassfield, Mason Kehl Brassfield, Tucker Gage Brassfield, Haylie Nicole Delozier, Nathan Michael Delozier, Cody Jules Canel, Emily Irene Bell, Cory David Bell, Megan Maxine Canel, and Ashlyn Leigh Canel; and a step-granddaughter, Alexis Nicoli Glaub. Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City, where funeral services will be held Thursday (October 10, 2013) at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Eschbaugh officiating. Burial will be at Friends Cemetery, Quaker City.
