Mary T. Miller, 88, of Cambridge, recently residing at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell, passed away Sept. 12, 2018, of natural causes after a brief stay at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center.
Mary was born on Feb. 28, 1930, in Boston, Mass. She grew up in Prince Edward Island, Canada, as the eldest of fourteen children. After teaching in a one-room school house in P.E.I., Mary craved seeing new places, and emigrated to Ellsworth, Maine. There, she met her beloved husband of 53 years, Robert (Bob) Miller of Cambridge. They were married in Maine on Sept. 2, 1957.
Bob served in the U.S. Navy, and Mary joined him in multiple postings around the world, including Florida, Japan, Maryland, Morocco, Okinawa, and Spain. Mary loved traveling and discovering new cultures throughout Bob's Navy career, as well as afterwards.
Mary and Bob began a new phase of their life in the 1970s when Bob retired from the Navy and moved back to Cambridge, his birthplace. Mary worked at General Telephone, and later volunteered for numerous causes. She was active at St. Benedict's Church in Cambridge, where she served as Secretary of the Parish Council. Mary volunteered for many years at Guernsey Memorial Hospital. She also served as a foster parent for, and assisted several teenage mothers.
Mary was well known and liked for her compassion and willingness to help others. She loved all of her grandchildren. Mary enjoyed reading, politics, and spending time with family. She particularly enjoyed teaching new subjects, and instilled in others an ethic of hard work and intellectual pursuits.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home in Cambridge. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Benedict's Church in Cambridge, with Father Robert Borer and Father Paul Hrezo officiating.
