Mary Elizabeth (Severns) Eakin, 96, passed peacefully on Oct. 10, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born March 24 1918, in Birmingham, daughter of the late William and Ora (Stewart) Severns She graduated from Madison High School and the Cambridge Business College. She married the love of her life, Brooks H. Eakin on Dec. 25, 1941. They were married for 68 years. Mrs. Eakin retired from Sears where she loved working and talking to her customers. She was a member of the Ninth Street United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Reed Circle. She was a First Family of Guernsey County on three sides of her family. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and traveling, especially the family vacations to Myrtle Beach. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brooks H. Eakin; two brothers, Harry and Curtis Severns; and a brother-in-law, James Eakin. She is survived by a son, Tim (Ruth) Eakin of Zanesville; three daughters, Linda McFadden of Columbus, Sherry (Michael) Oatney of Sugar Grove and Marilyn (Chuck) Gibson of Cambridge; grandchildren, Lisa (Kevin) McClatchy, Derik (Carrie) Hertel, Neil (Molly) Gibson, Annie (John) Hastings, Eric (Amy) Gibson, Alison Eakin, Leslie (Sean) Eakin, Brad (Diana) Eakin, Sarah (Wirley) Weiler and Sean (Tammie) Oatney; 15 great-grandchildren, nephews, Tom and Bill Severns, Jeff, Larry and Ken Eakin; and a special cousin, Bill Armstrong. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, with Pastor Karen Rawlins officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Byesville. Because of her love of animals, reading and the church, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Humane Society of Guernsey County, 108 A Franklin Ave., Cambridge, or to the Ninth Street United Methodist Church, 129 N. Ninth Street, Cambridge.
