Max Walton Bates

Max Walton Bates, 83, of Cambridge and formerly of Quaker City, died Sunday (January 23, 2011) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. He was born August 6, 1927 in Cambridge, son of the late McKinley "Ted" Bates and Mary (McVicker) Bates. Max graduated from Canton McKinley High School and was employed by Hercules Motors before entering Harding University, where he earned a B.A. in history and education. Later he received an M.A. from Webster University in St. Louis, where he taught for thirty years. He was a life member of the Missouri Teachers Association and the National Education Association. Max was a US Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the 10th & Clairmont Church of Christ, Cambridge. In addition to his parents, Max is preceded in death by a sister, Evlyn; and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Jodi (Davidson) Bates of Fayetteville AR; and three grandchildren, Trevor (& Elly), Maggie, and Emma. No calling hours will be observed. A memorial service will be held Wednesday (January 26, 2011) at 11 a.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, with Evangelist Bruce Daugherty officiating.
