Melba L. Carpenter, 80, of Quaker City, died Thursday (May 5, 2011) at the Wheeling Hospital Medical Park. She was born April 16, 1931 in Monroe County, daughter of the late Mansel Pierce and Olive (Hayes) Pierce. Mrs. Carpenter retired from Hamilton Beach. She was a member of the Calais Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Sue Postelwait; two brothers, Beryl and John Pierce; and two sisters, Connie Pierce and Laurie Stephen. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Carpenter of the home; a son, Pete (& Karen) Carpenter of Calais; three brothers, Roy (& Naoma) Pierce of Killbuck, Joe (& Vickie) Pierce of Salesville, and Bob (& Peg) Pierce of Salesville; two sisters, Emma Jean Schlosser of Byesville and Ocie (& Joe) McFredrick of Jerusalem; seven grandchildren, Connie (& Don) Hill, Tammy (& Don) Erbis, Nary Postelwait, Bobby (& James) Hostetler, Greg (& Rachel) Carpenter, Shawn (& Stephanie) Carpenter, and Cole Carpenter; and seven great-grandchildren. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City. Funeral services will be held Monday (May 9, 2011) at 11 a.m. at the Calais Church with Pastor Brandon Ward officiating. Burial will be at Calais Cemetery.
