Michael D. Kavage, 78, of Lore City, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on January 4, 1947, in Martins Ferry, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Mildred (Boich) Kavage.

Mike proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade. As a Sky Soldier during the Vietnam War, he completed countless jumps and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and numerous other commendations. After his military service, he worked as a coal miner and later retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources as an oil and gas well inspector.

A Methodist by faith, Mike was also a member of the Quaker City #500 Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, boating, and spending time outdoors. He had a personality like no other—his quick wit, ornery streak, and unforgettable sense of humor brought laughter to everyone around him. He took great pride in his achievements and was fortunate to spend many years doing the things he loved most. Above all, Mike was known as a dependable friend and, most importantly, a loving husband, father, and Pap. In his later years, he found great comfort in the devoted companionship of his granddaughter, Robin, and his great-grandson, Weston, whose presence meant the world to him.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol (Turner) Kavage. The couple married on May 25, 1967, and built a life filled with love, memories, and family. He is also survived by his daughters, Sheri (Duane) McDonald of Crossville, TN, and Mary (Jon) DeGenova of Sunbury, OH; his sister, Joyce Muething of New Mexico; his grandchildren, RJ Goldsmith, Robin Goldsmith, Darius Walker, Andrew DeGenova, and Alexa DeGenova; and his great-grandchildren, Kiara, Joselyn, and Weston Goldsmith. He will also be deeply missed by many cousins and countless friends.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home in Cambridge, OH, with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Kipling VFW. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Guernsey in Mike’s honor.
