Pastor Frederic D. Roy Barrett, 73, of Cambridge, died Thursday (May 22, 2014), at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 25, 1940, in Salesville, son of the late George W. Barrett and Elizabeth H. (Thomas) Barrett. He lived most of his life in Guernsey County. Pastor Barrett was a graduate of Quaker City High School and Spurgeon Baptist Bible College in Mulberry, Fla. He was called to be pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cambridge in August 1980. He retired in January 2013 after 32 years as pastor. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from November 1958 to February 1962. Fred worked as an electronic technician for a number of companies, including RCA, Magnavox, AT&T, GG's CB, NCR, United Technologies and Byesville Aesptics. He became a Christian in April 1969, having put his trust in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, having his sins washed away in the shed blood of Jesus. He loved day camp and the camp kids. He served as camp director for Faith Independent Baptist Bible Camp for 30 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Marion F. "Buddy" Barrett, Gene H. Barrett and Thomas W. "Bill" Barrett; and a sister, Margaret E. Marlatt. He is survived by his wife, Bessie F. (MCune) Barrett, whom he married July 15, 1962; three sons, Terry E. (Debbie) Barrett of Cambridge, Troy B. Barrett of Cambridge and Todd D. Barrett of Clarksburg, W.Va.; a brother, George D. (Shirley) Barrett of Fairborn; four granddaughters, Vanessa (Scott), Tiffany (Matt), Shannon and Chelbi; two grandsons, Austin and Tyson; two great-granddaughters, Evealyn and Ariella; a great-grandson, Noah; a daughter-in-law, Christine Barrett of Cambridge; and a special neighbor, Annie. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where the service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday (May 27, 2014) with Pastors Wilbur Bragg and Gary Roth officiating. Burial will be at Guernsey Memory Gardens, Cambridge, with military rites by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
