Paul Michael German

Paul Michael German, age 89, of Zanesville, Ohio, formerly of Cambridge, passed away February 25, 2025.

He was born on July 28, 1935, to the Reverend Andrew and Susan (Geçy) German in the parsonage of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pleasant City, Ohio and graduated from Pleasant City High School in 1953.  He took many chemistry courses at Ohio University-Zanesville before serving in the United States Army from 1958 to 1959.

He was an analytical chemist by trade and, with the exception of a brief stint at NCR, worked his entire career for the same company, beginning soon after high school as a lab assistant with Vanadium Corporation of America, which became Foote Mineral, and later Shieldalloy Metallurgical Corporation where he retired as Laboratory Manager in 1999.

In midlife, he studied and obtained his auctioneer license and assisted in conducting auctions with Wally Trout in Zanesville for several years until Wally's retirement. He took up oil painting as a hobby and into his retirement also ran a bottle light business for several years, traveling to many craft shows around Ohio.

Following his official retirement from Shieldalloy, he began a second career with the Ohio State University Athletic Department where he worked for 20 years as a Redcoat at OSU football games and countless sporting events on campus. An avid golfer, he played many rounds of golf around the area and annually in South Carolina with his golfing buddies. He worked several seasons at Wildfire Golf Course in New Concord and shot his only hole-in-one there. He was a member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pleasant City for most of his life where he served faithfully in many capacities through the years until transferring to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zanesville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Ted and Dan German, and sister Ruth Milan; also, grand dog Jade.

He is survived by his former wife Carol Foor; sons James (Lori) German, Thomas German, and daughter Katherine (Brett) Hubbard; grandchildren Erin (Kale) Houck and John German; sister Lydia Hammond; sister-in-law June German; eleven nieces and nephews and several cousins; grand dogs Pearl and Gem, as well as countless friends.

Calling hours will be Sunday, March 2, from 2-5 pm and also Monday, March 3, from 10 am - 11 Am and funeral services will be held Monday, March 3, at 11 am at Thorn-Black Funeral Home in Cambridge, with the Rev. Andrew Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant City Cemetery with military honors by the Guernsey Veteran Council.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 128 South Seventh St., Zanesville, OH 43701.
