Robert E. Cesner of Cambridge, passed away May 10, 2007 at home surrounded by his family. He was born June 13, 1917, son of the late Charles and Christine (Cassell) Cesner. He was a graduate of Brown High School in 1935. Mr. Cesner served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed in the South Pacific from April 1944 to December 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church since 1961. Mr. Cesner served as the Guernsey County Welfare Director from March 1959 through December 1979 and retiring in January 1980. He was instrumental in the building of the office of Health & Human Services on Highland Avenue. He was also responsible for starting the Senior Citizens Van Service in Guernsey County. He worked for many years for Fred Raymond Clothing Store, Davis Department Store and Universal Pottery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary L. Strauss Cesner in September 1960; three brothers, Cassell, Charles and Louie; and a sister, Margaret Moore. He is survived by his wife, Martha Ann (Hughes) Cesner of the home, whom he married on August 20, 1968; four sons, Robert E. (Ann) Cesner Jr. of Worthington, David L. (Pam) Cesner Sr. of Cambridge, Dan (Becky) Cesner of Westerville and Dan Perkins of Columbus; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Laura Belle Hughes of Cambridge; sisters-in-law, Catherine R. Strauss of Cambridge and Peggy Cesner of Columbus; and brother-in-law, John (Judy) Hughes of Birmingham. Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where wake services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday (May 12, 2007) at 10:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Father Robert Borer and Father Tim Kozak officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Guernsey, Inc., P.O. Box 1165, Cambridge OH 43725.
