Robert P. Murphy, 96, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (March 11, 2008) at the Cambridge Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born on January 5, 1912 in Guernsey County, son of the late Thomas J. Murphy and Mattie M. (Robinette) Murphy. He married Janet Elizabeth (Troetchel) in 1951. Mr. Murphy was the former Guernsey County Superintendent of Schools from 1949 until his retirement in 1968. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Muskingum College and his Master's Degree from The University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Murphy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cambridge and also a member of the Kiwanis Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Elizabeth (Troetchel) Murphy, who died on September 28, 1989; and a brother, Ralph Murphy. He leaves a daughter, Sandy (& Robert) Barnes of Carlisle; three grandchildren, Elizabeth June Barnes of Carlisle, Robert S. (& Ginnie) Barnes of Olive Branch MS and Thomas J. (& Jennifer) Barnes of Canton MI; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Abigail Barnes, Will Barnes and Erin Nicole Barnes. Family and friends may call on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be held on Saturday (March 15, 2008) at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with military graveside services conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
