Rose Lucille (Bailey) McAfee passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Blossom Hill Care Center in Huntsburg, Ohio. She had lived in Cambridge, Ohio most of her life. Born at Senecaville, Ohio on March 2, 1920, she was the sixth of the seven children born to Michael and Anna (Varga) Bailey. She was a graduate of Senecaville High School and had also attended classes at Ohio University. Rose married Herbert McAfee on June 6, 1937 and they were the parents of three daughters. Following the death of her husband she worked briefly at Peoples Life Insurance Company and then worked at the Daily Jeffersonian as a news reporter and society-lifestyles editor until her retirement. A prolific writer, she wrote many magazine articles, and then she completed two volumes on the history of coal mining in Guernsey County--Down in the Depths with Pick and Shovel, Vol. I and II. Her most recent work was Sixty Years of Guernsey County, which she completed while in her eighties. A member of several news and writing organizations including Midwest Writers, Rose also was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cambridge where she had served on the Session and as a commissioner to the Muskingum Valley Presbytery. She had been a member of the Alpha Omega Circle, Business and Professional Girls, Business and Professional Women, and various other local organizations. The last of her generation in her family, Rose is survived by her daughters, Rose Arlene (Walter) Stackhouse of Orwell, Carol Ann (Thomas) Gerbec of Naples FL and Nancy Lou (Zane) Nutter of Homestead FL; her grandchildren, Mark Stackhouse, Ashlie Nutter, Dwayne Rodgers, Rhonda Fuller, Robin Patrick, Shannon Rodgers, Matthew Rodgers and Travis Gerbec; her great-grandchildren, Jonathan Belyea, Jessica Bruland, Whitney Garza, Ashley Patrick, Brandon Rodgers, Paris Patrick, Alexandria Patrick, Taylor Flannagan, Craig Stackhouse, Leanne Stackhouse, Brian Stackhouse and Bradley Stackhouse; her great-great-grandchildren, Divinity Bruland, Gage Bruland and Caesar Garza; her step-grandchildren, Scott Gerbec, Letitia Fairbrother; her step-great-grandchildren, Heather Gerbec, Nicole Fairbrother, Kyle Gerbec and Scott Gerbec, Jr.; a step-great-great-grandchild, Sarah Gerbec; a former son-in-law: Barrett (Mary) Rodgers; and many nieces & nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Anna Bailey; her husband Herbert in 1957; grandsons, Lance Alan Stackhouse and Darren Wade Stackhouse; great-grandson, Landon Rodgers; sisters, Mary Madia, Catherine Bailey; brothers, Paul Bailey, John Bailey, Michael Bailey, and Frank Bailey. Visitation will be held on Thursday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, from 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. A celebration of life will be held on Friday (October 2, 2009) at the Thorn-Black Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor William Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorial gifts be given to First Presbyterian Church, 725 Steubenville Ave., Cambridge, Ohio 43725; the Heart Fund; or to a charity of your choice.
