Roy E. Landstrom, 76, of Cumberland, passed away Tuesday (May 6, 2014) at his home after a long bout with bone marrow cancer.
He was born October 11, 1937 in Quincy MA, son of the late Waldo and Mildred (Swanson) Landstrom.
Roy lived a full and interesting life. He always wanted to know the facts, which led him into becoming a wildlife biologist with the Department of the Interior where he was a researcher. His need to know started as a young boy living on the East Coast during WWII, when his deep-rooted interest in airplanes began. By joining a model airplane club, he learned patience, accuracy, and aeronautical engineering in its simplest form. He attended many WWII reenactments and also watched the Blue Angels. His highlight was flying the P51 Mustang.
He was drafted into the Army Reserves as a game warden at Fort Johnson.
Volunteering was his way of giving back to others. He was a camp counselor at the NRA "Adventure Camp" at the Whittington Center in Raton NM. He worked with Ted Nugent at his summer camp for kids. Both camps were wonderful opportunities for young people. He also volunteered at Deerasic Park through their school education programs. They went on nature walks through the woods, exploring along the way and learning facts of nature. He also volunteered at Deerasic Classic, so education could continue with the young and families.
At Camp Perry, he was in charge of the Function Range Meeting, which included some of the greatest marksmanship shooters in the world.
He enjoyed writing in order to share information and first make people think – he wrote "Letters to the Editor", as well as newspaper and magazine articles. He enjoyed talking with others, sharing viewpoints, and forming many friendships.
Roy attended Old Cambridge Baptist Church and always helped when needed. His love of the Lord and his faith grew stronger by the day. He was always willing to share his faith. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Landstrom.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Lawrence) Landstrom, whom he married April 25, 1975; a son, Erik Landstrom of New Hampshire; two daughters, Deborah (& John) Tricket of Massachusetts and Donna (& Hans) Dibbits of Canada; a sister-in-law, Sandra Landstrom of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge.
