Sarah Ruth "Ruth" (Milstead) McConkey, 86, of Warner, formerly of Byesville, passed away Tuesday (September 20, 2011) at Marietta Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born September 25, 1924 on Fish Creek Island (Woodland), WV and was the daughter of the late Jasper Milstead and Laura Leota (Hornbeck) Milstead Nutter. She was a former employee of Republic Steel in Canton, the Red Brick Tea Room in Cambridge, Kennedy's Bakery and the Western Motel. She was a member of the Salvation Army and a long time member of the Home League as well as a volunteer in the clothing room. She was also a Girl Guard leader. She enjoyed reading, sewing, embroidery and crocheting. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, William E. McConkey. They were married February 23, 1954 and he passed away on Veteran's Day 2000. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Willie Nutter; four sisters and four brothers. She is survived by a son, William A. (Veronica) McConkey of Cambridge; four daughters, Mrs. Ron (Carol Ruth) Skeen of Parkersburg, Janis McConkey of the home, Mrs. Robert (Linda) Doering of La Grange and Sandra Bumgardner of Cambridge; a foster daughter, Anetta Huhn of Cambridge; five grandchildren, Daniel and Emily Bumgardner, Heather and Nicholas Skeen, Olivia Tonnous; one great grandson Zackery Justice; a sister, Florence Dobbins of Fernley, Nevada; three sister-in-laws, Pat Milstead of Caldwell, Ruth Milstead of Macksburg and Juanita McConkey of Cambridge; many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge where services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Capt. Gary Thornton officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery.
