Sylvester (S.P.) "Jack " Miller, 85, of Birmingham, died Saturday (March 25, 2017) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. He was born October 7, 1931 in Blaze Fork WV, son of the late Verdie R. Miller and Maude E. (Hines) Miller. Jack retired from Cambridge City Schools, where he was a science teacher for sixteen years. He taught at Newport and Madison Schools, where he served as principal at both schools. He also taught at Uhrichsville Schools. He was a member of the OEA and NEA. He was a 1950 graduate of Madison High School and graduated from Muskingum College in 1955. Mr. Miller is a member of the Birmingham Methodist Church, where he served as lay leader, council president, and taught Sunday School for over fifty years. He is a member of The Gideons International. He enjoyed farming. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry, Waldo, and Cleo Miller. He is survived by his wife, Monta Rose (McCollum) Miller, whom he married on June 26, 1966; two sons, Neal (Melissa) Miller of Medina and Paul (Wendy) Miller of Port Washington; a brother, Charles Holt Miller of Birmingham; five grandchildren, Owen, Grace, and Kevin Miller of Medina, and Roston and Brittyn Miller of Port Washington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held Tuesday (March 28, 2017) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday (March 29, 2017) at 11 a.m. with Pastor Matt Wilson and Pastor Gerald Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Clearfork Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Gideons International, PO Box 97251, Washington DC 20090-7251.
