Thomas "Tom" Henry Schaub, 80, of Englewood FL and formerly of Cambridge, suddenly died Tuesday (June 11, 2013) as the result of heart failure. He was visiting family and friends in Cambridge at the time of his death. He was born November 7, 1932 in Cambridge, son of the late Cornelius Charles Schaub and Ora (Tennant) Schaub. Tom grew up and attended schools in Cambridge. Among Tom's various high school activities was his playing of the trumpet in the CHS Band. He was also a member of the CHS Wrestling Team. After his graduation from Cambridge High School in 1950, his wrestling skills won him a four-year tuition scholarship to Ohio University in Athens. While attending OU, Tom enrolled in their R.O.T.C. program, in which he excelled. Upon graduation from college, Tom decided to join the United States Air Force. During Tom's twenty-two year career in the USAF, he became a member of the elite Strategic Air Command (SAC). He also served a one-year tour of duty as pilot/navigator flying B-52 bombing missions over SE Asia during the Vietnam conflict. While still in the Air Force, Tom obtained an MBA degree from Indiana University after which the Air Force sent him to the Pentagon in Washington DC. His primary assignment while at the Pentagon was to evaluate major weapon systems and make presentations to the US Congress. Tom retired from his military service as a Lt. Colonel and moved to Englewood FL, where he owned and operated a Real Estate Brokerage firm for the next fourteen years. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the VFW and Elks Lodges. Tom loved, played, and worked hard all of his life. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, practical manner, and charming personality. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest grandson, Andrew Schaub. He is survived by his wife of twenty-three years, Nancye Carol (Ellis) Schaub of Englewood FL; two children, Thomas Andrew Schaub of Dover FL and Lizabeth Faye Pierce of Lakeland FL; two granddaughters, Carrie Elizabeth Pierce and Rachel Victoria Schaub; and a grandson, Morgan Thomas Schaub. Other family members include Richard O. (& Bonnie) Schaub of Carmel IN, C. Charles (& Nancy) Schaub of Cambridge, Joan (& Charles) Boyd of Cambridge, three nieces, and three nephews. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where Masonic services conducted by the Guernsey Lodge # 66 F. & A. M. will begin at 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (June 17th) at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, with Rev. Keith Leach officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions in Tom's name be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa FL 33607.
