Wayne David "Dave" Dugan, 83, (affectionately known in our family as "The Great One") slipped quietly away on September 13, 2014 at the Pickering House in Lancaster following a sudden illness. He was born August 31, 1931 on Finley Avenue in Cambridge, the only child of the late Kenneth Wayne Dugan and Edith (Mason) Dugan. Dave grew up in both the Cambridge and Canton areas. He attended Cambridge High School. With a desire to "see the world", he enlisted in the United States Army in 1950. Dave served in Korea in the 25th Infantry Division, 8th Field Artillery. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a Staff Sergeant. Upon his return home from Korea, he met the love of his life, the late Peggie V. (Cogsil) Dugan. They married on October 16, 1954 and settled into their home on North 8th Street. Dave joined the Cambridge Fire Department in 1956. He frequently said that it was really not a job to him - he loved going to work every day. He remained at the department until his retirement in 1988. Military history was Dave's passion in life. He had no formal training, but he was a self-taught historian and genealogist. He spent hours researching his latest topics. He had the gift of making history come alive with his writing and storytelling. He was well known for his military collection. A true Irishman, Dave never met a stranger and was a very social person. With a twinkle in his eye, he enjoyed getting to know everyone he met. He spent many happy hours at the Guernsey County Senior Center. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 0084 and the VFW Post 2901. He is survived by two daughters, Cassandra (& Gary) Henderson of Thornville and Audrey Dugan of Mansfield; two grandsons, Brandon (& Heather) McCoy of Granville and Cameron McCoy (& his fiancée, Alyson Thomas) of Dayton; and his feline companion, Q.T. Also left to mourn his passing are two special families, The Warnes and the Formans of Cambridge, as well as Dave's longtime best friend, John Gordon of Reynoldsburg. Visitation will be held Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where funeral services will be held Friday (September 19, 2014) at 1 p.m. with Jim Gibson officiating. Burial will be at Northwood Cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
