Wilford "Shorty" Winnett, 84 of Cambridge died Sunday (May 13, 2007) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. He was born July 15, 1922, in Senecaville, son of the late Raymond G. and Lula Pearl (Hennen) Winnett. Mr. Winnett was retired owner of Ace Disposal. He was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran, having been involved in five different battles during his tour of duty. He was on Tarawa when the U.S. flag was raised. During Mr. Winnett's encounters he was uninjured. He was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Winnett; and a sister, Sarah Downing. He leaves his wife, Betty L. (Ross) Winnett, whom he married March 8, 1947; three sons, Howard (Marcia) Winnett of Cambridge, Jack (Mary) Winnett of Athens and Gerald (Kathy) Winnett of Senecaville; a daughter, Nancy (Scott) Philpot of Pittsburgh, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim) Denniston and Kristin Winnett, both of Indianapolis, IN., Shaun Winnett, who is serving in the U.S. Navy in San Diego, CA., Kevin Winnett of Dalesville, Ala., Lindsay Winnett and Jason Winnett, both of Athens, Jamie Winnett of Reynoldsburg and Karlie Winnett of Cincinnati; and a great granddaughter, Amaya Winnett. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Tuesday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge where services will be on Wednesday 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Terry Litton officiating. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council.
