William Edgar Smith Sr., 72, of Cambridge, died Sunday (October 11, 2015) at Select Specialty Hospital, Akron. He was born November 3, 1942 in Cambridge, son of the late Charles Smith and Martha (Aryes) Smith. He was a self-employed truck driver for many years. Mr. Smith was a US Army veteran, having served from 1962 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant for his service and was awarded the following for his honorable service to his country: a Good Conduct Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, a National Defense Service Medal, a Bronze Star 3 Overseas Bars, an Army Commendation Medal, and a Gallantry Cross. His overseas service included time spent in Vietnam, Korea, Hawaii, and France. He was a member of the Cambridge VFW Post 2901. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Verta Smith and Debbie Scott; a niece, Melissa Scott Parker; and a special friend, Patricia Huggins. He is survived by a son, William E. Smith Jr. of Virginia; a daughter, Theresa Smith (& Clint) Suttles of Zanesville; his grandchildren, Alisha (& Keith) Scott of Cambridge, Kathryn (& Billie) Watson of Lore City, Zachary (& Amber) Smith of Cambridge, Chelsee (& Jeremy) Graham of Byesville, Camee Smith (& Michael) Oakley of Senecaville, Brittney Suttles of Zanesville, and Cassandra Suttles of Zanesville; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Private services were held for the family. Burial was at Northwood Cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by the Guernsey County Veterans Council. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cambridge VFW Post 2901, PO Box 302, Cambridge OH 43725.
