John Clifford Hymes, 92, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.
John was born on May 11, 1930, in Cambridge, Ohio, a son of the late Clifford and Irene (Wallenfelsz) Hymes.
He was a 1948 Graduate of Cambridge High School and a longtime employee of ODOT where he later retired. John was a member of the VFW #2901, the Eagles, American Legion, Elks, Masonic Temple #66, Scottish Rite, and Kambri Shrine. He was a fan on the Cleveland Indians, Cavaliers, Browns, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He had a great milk bottle collection. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Elnora (Ellie)(Glaskill) Hymes, whom he married on October 1, 1960, his sister, Sara (Bill) Dumbauld of Pickerington, his nieces, Melissa (Rick) McAdam of Livingston, Montana, Sara Elizabeth Marsino of Naples, Florida, Kim (Mark) Bolton of Navarre, Florida, and Anna Henry of Grove City, his nephew, David Henry of Cambridge, his sister-in-law, Naomi Jean Henry of Cambridge, and his adopted granddaughter, Hallie (Tommy) Davis of the home.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 11AM-1PM at Thorn Black Funeral Home in Cambridge with the service to immediately follow with Pastor David Glass officiating. Burial will be held at Northwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Guernsey County Veterans Counsel.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions made in John's name be made to the Guernsey County Humane Society, 108A Franklin Avenue, Cambridge, Ohio, 43725. The family would like to thank Amy's Helping Hands for their help during his care.
