John Francis Latchic passed away peacefully on July 16, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio. Born on July 7, 1945, in Cambridge, Ohio, John lived a life of service, kindness, and generosity that touched many hearts and left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
John was the beloved son of the late John and Mary Latchic, and the cherished brother to Barbara Choma (deceased) and Marie Secrest. He was a loving uncle to Mary Ellen Choma (deceased), Rita Collins, Beth Vazzano, Diane Secrest, Joel Secrest, and Tom Secrest. His family will remember him as a kind and friendly soul who always had time for his loved ones.
John was a proud graduate of St. Benedict High School, after which he pursued his bachelor's degree in business from Walsh College. He went on to earn a master’s degree in educational development from Xavier University. Education was not only a personal pursuit for John but also became a lifelong career.
John dedicated 36 years of his life to Walsh University in North Canton, where he served in various roles, including admissions, commuter services, and career services. His commitment and service to the university community did not go unnoticed. In 2019, he was honored with Walsh's Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his lifetime of service to Walsh and its alumni. He was also a respected member of the Walsh Heritage Society.
John's faith was an integral part of his life. He was a lifetime member of Christ Our Light Parish in Cambridge, where he served his community faithfully. He was also a First Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Council 1641, embodying the values of charity, unity, and fraternity.
Despite his numerous achievements and commitments, John always found time for his interests. He was a long-suffering fan of the Cleveland Indians, always cheering them on regardless of the season's outcome. His love for sports didn't stop there; he also enjoyed supporting the Cleveland Browns and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
John's life was characterized by kindness, generosity, and friendliness. These attributes were not just words, but a way of life for him. He was a beacon of positivity, always ready with a kind word or a friendly smile. His generosity extended beyond his family and friends, touching the lives of countless individuals throughout his life.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Thorn Black Funeral Home from 6PM-8PM, and additional visitation from 9:30AM-10:30AM with a Funeral Mass to follow on July 27, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Christ Our Light Church.
John Francis Latchic will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service, kindness, and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His life serves as a reminder of the impact one person can have when they live their life with purpose, integrity, and love.
