Shirley Douglas Obituary

Shirley Jean (Gray) Douglas, 88 of Cambridge, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 3, 2022. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. 

Shirley was born January 12, 1934, in Guernsey county, Wheeling township, at the Wallace place, Kimbolton Ohio, the oldest child of E Wade Gray of Monroe County, Ohio and Elizabeth E (Miller) Gray of Kimbolton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother William C Gray 2012 (Dora, 2018) of Cambridge. 

She is survived by her brother, Thomas W Gray (Deanne) of Cambridge.  She is also survived by her husband, James Lassiter Douglas, whom she married May 18, 1952, and additionally their 4 children, David M (Vanessa) Douglas of Gambier, Ohio, Jay B (Roberta, passed away 2004) of Cambridge, Ohio, Janet S (Jeff) Brown of Fort Mill, South Carolina and Scott E (Anne) Douglas of Rocky River, Ohio, 11 grandchildren, Zachary and Emily Douglas, Colin and Tyler Brown, Keath and Austin Douglas, Elizabeth, Wade, Rebekah, Sarah and Grace Douglas, and 4 great-grandchildren Violet, James, Evelyn and Hattie Douglas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  

A 1951 graduate of Cambridge High School, Shirley attended grade school at Hopewell School in Indian Camp and was a 74-year member of Mt. Hermon Presbyterian Church. Shirley worked at Kroger for 13 years, Bank One for 8 years, as well as Kingston Conley, Newberrys, and as a mail carrier. Shirley enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, sewing, floral arranging, participating in Hopewell Homemakers, Willing Workers Sunday school class, Cambridge glass club, and missionary society. Her family will miss her orange cookies and noodles.

Her proudest achievement with her husband Jim was successfully raising their children on their farm. Jim and Shirley celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past May.

Visitation hours will be held Monday, September 5, 2022, from 3 to 5 pm and from 7 to 9 pm at Thorn-Black Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 6, at 11 am at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, 139 South 9th street, Cambridge OH 43725 with burial to follow at Mt. Hermon Cemetery, 5775 Lemon Hill Road Cambridge, OH 43725. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shirley's name to the Mt. Hermon Presbyterian Church, 5775 Lemon Hill Road Cambridge, OH 43725.
